AI Search Visibility: Why Service Businesses Score 30 out of 100
Keith Carpenter • September 2, 2026

AI search visibility is how often your business shows up when someone asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, or Perplexity for a recommendation. A new 2026 benchmark scored more than 200 U.S. service businesses on it. The average score was 30 out of 100. That means roughly 70% of the AI visibility available to a typical contractor is sitting unclaimed, and the fixes are mostly things you already own: your reviews, your profile, and your website content. This is ai search visibility, and it is now a real part of local marketing.

⚡ QUICK SUMMARY

The SMB AI Visibility Benchmark Report 2026 (Fast Hippo Media) scored service businesses on five areas. Average AI visibility score: 30/100 . Local signals were the strongest area at 48/100 . The technical layer was the biggest false sense of security: 71% had some markup installed, but only 22% had it validated . This post explains what the score means, why classic local SEO wins do not fully carry into AI answers, and the three fixes that move a contractor from 30 to above average.

SpeedMobi has built marketing systems for more than 5,000 home service businesses since 2013, across 87+ trades. For most of that time, "getting found" meant one thing: the Google map pack. That is still the biggest lever. But a growing slice of homeowners now ask an AI to pick a plumber for them, and the AI does not read your website the way Google used to. This report is the first clean scoreboard we have seen for how service businesses are doing in that new lane.

What Is an AI Search Visibility Score?

An AI visibility score measures how often, and how well, your business appears in AI generated answers when people ask AI search engines for a recommendation in your category and area. The report used a five-pillar AI Visibility Index, weighted like this (SMB AI Visibility Benchmark Report, 2026):

1 AEO content readiness (25%)

Do your pages answer real customer questions in plain language that AI answers can lift directly? Passage-first pages score well here. Pages that are one paragraph of fluff and a phone number do not.

2 Structured data health (20%)

LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ markup that is installed AND validated. This is the pillar most businesses think they have covered and do not.

3 AI citation presence (20%)

How often AI platforms actually name your business or cite your pages when generating answers. Third-party mentions and consistent listings feed this.

4 Local signal strength (20%)

Google Business Profile completeness, review freshness, and consistent name, address, and phone across the web. The pillar service businesses scored best on, averaging 48/100.

5 Measurement and capture (15%)

Whether you can see traffic and leads coming from AI search results and capture them when they arrive. Most contractors have zero tracking here.

Think of the score the same way you think of a Google Business Profile completeness score. It is not a guarantee of leads. It tells you where AI models are likely to skip you and why.

Why Do Service Businesses Score So Low on AI Search Visibility?

The average service business scores 30/100 because AI platforms reward things most contractors never built: question-and-answer content, validated markup, and fresh reviews. The report's own conclusion is worth reading twice. Traditional local SEO advantages may not automatically translate into AI visibility (Fast Hippo Media, 2026).

30/100

Average AI visibility score for U.S. service businesses

48/100

Average local signals score, the strongest of the five areas

22%

Businesses with validated structured data, vs 71% with schema installed

Here is why the gap exists. Google's traditional search engines could rank a thin service page on proximity and reviews alone. AI engines build an answer from text they can extract. If your plumbing page says "We are a family owned plumber serving the area, call today," there is nothing for an AI to quote. A competitor whose page says "A standard 40-gallon gas water heater replacement in Tampa runs $1,400 to $2,200 installed, and we finish most in one visit" gives the model exactly what it needs.

The same rule applies to reviews. Google ranks on review volume and recency. AI answers lean heavily on what the reviews say. Fifty reviews that mention "showed up on time" and "fixed the leak the same day" teach the model what you are good at. That is where local visibility and AI visibility overlap, and it is the reason the 2026 local ranking factors and this benchmark point at the same first fix.

The structured data trap: 71% of businesses in the study had some form of markup installed. Only 22% had validated it. Broken or half-filled markup gives you the confidence of a technical foundation with almost none of the benefit. If a web company told you "the technical side is done," ask to see the validation report.

Which Local Signals Improve Visibility in AI Answers?

Four local signals influence how a business is represented when consumers ask AI systems for recommendations: review freshness, local markup, complete business profiles, and consistent business information (same report, 2026). These are the cheapest points on the board, and they double as Google map pack work.

Review freshness matters more than total count. A steady stream of new reviews tells both Google and AI models that people are choosing you now. Our automated review request system exists for exactly that reason, and if your reviews ever go missing, here is what is usually happening. Complete profiles mean every service listed with a description, hours that are actually right, and photos added monthly. Consistency means one name, one address, one phone number everywhere, so the model is not guessing which "Smith Plumbing" you are. If you have ever dropped out of local search, inconsistent information was probably part of the story.

We have written before about how AI search picks a local business. The short version has not changed: the businesses AI recommends are the ones with the most clear, consistent, recent evidence that they are good at one specific thing in one specific place.

How Do You Get AI Visibility as a Small Business?

The report lists the fix order, and it matches what we run for clients. Start with local signals, then content, then structured data, then a review process, then refresh (2026 report). Here is the plain-English version:

1 Fix the local foundation first

Complete your Google Business Profile: correct primary category, every service with a description, accurate hours, fresh photos. Make your name, address, and phone identical on every listing. This is the 48/100 pillar. Push it to 80 and your whole score moves.

2 Write pages that answer questions

For each service, answer the five questions customers actually ask: how much, how long, what is included, what goes wrong, how do I choose. Put the answer in the first two sentences under each heading. This is the 25% pillar and the one most competitors will never do.

3 Validate your structured data

Run your pages through Google's Rich Results Test. Fix errors. Add FAQ schema to the question pages from step two. Do not add more until the existing markup passes.

4 Build a review system, not a review push

One ask after every completed job, automatically. Fresh reviews every week beat a burst of 20 in one month.

5 Refresh what already works

Update your best pages every few months with new prices, new photos, and new answers. Stale content loses AI coverage over time.

💡 Pro Tip

You do not need an AI visibility tool to start. Open ChatGPT and Google AI Mode and ask, "Who is the best [your trade] in [your city]?" ten different ways. If you are not named, you have a 30/100 problem. If you are named but described wrong, you have a consistency problem. Either way, you now know which fix comes first.

What Does Ignoring AI Search Visibility Cost?

AI Overviews now appear on nearly half of Google searches, up 58% year over year (BrightEdge, 2026). Every one of those searches is a chance for a homeowner to get a recommendation without ever seeing a list of ten blue links. If your business is invisible in that answer, you are not losing a click. You are losing the whole conversation. And because the fixes are mostly free and mostly things you should be doing for the map pack anyway, the cost of waiting is pure loss.

Good local SEO is still the foundation. Google's own Danny Sullivan put it simply: good SEO is good GEO. The report just adds the part most contractors skip: prove it in text an AI can read, and keep it fresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good AI visibility score?

In the 2026 report, the average service business scored 30/100. Anything above 50 puts you well ahead of most local competitors. The top performers combined a complete profile, fresh reviews, validated markup, and question-answering content.

Is there a tool that can check my AI visibility score?

Yes. Several AI visibility trackers now measure how often your brand appears in AI search results across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and compare your share of voice to competitors. SpeedMobi runs weekly AI visibility tracking for clients as part of our local SEO reporting.

Does AI search visibility replace local SEO?

No. Local signals were the strongest area in the study, and they feed both the map pack and AI answers. AI visibility adds a content and technical layer on top of local SEO. It does not replace it.

How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

Profile and consistency fixes show up in weeks. Content and markup changes typically take one to three months to change how AI engines describe and cite you, based on what we see across client accounts. Results vary by market and competition.

How do AI search engines decide which brand appears in an answer?

AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode build AI generated answers from sources they trust. A brand appears in AI answers when AI platforms find consistent brand mentions, fresh reviews, and pages that answer the question directly. Traditional search rewarded links and proximity. AI search optimization, also called answer engine optimization, rewards clarity and proof. That is why strong AI visibility and good traditional SEO overlap so much, and why AI powered search engines keep citing the same well-documented local businesses.

How do you track AI visibility and share of voice?

An AI visibility tool or AI visibility checker runs your target questions across AI platforms, records whether your brand appears, and reports your share of voice against competitors. Pair that visibility data with Google Search Console and Google Analytics to see AI traffic and branded search traffic changes over time. Small business owners do not need an expensive AI search visibility tool to start. Ten manual questions in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews reveal the biggest visibility gaps. Then track AI visibility monthly so you know whether content optimization is closing them.

SpeedMobi has spent more than a decade making sure contractors get found on Google. AI search is the same job with a new grader. We already track AI visibility for our clients each week, and the fix list above is the one we run.
