I Audited 100 Contractor Google Listings. 87 Were Leaving Money on the Table.
Keith Carpenter • July 16, 2026

⚡ QUICK SUMMARY

We looked at 100 contractor Google Business Profiles. 87 of them had major problems that were costing them phone calls every day. Most owners didn't even know the listing existed. Here's what we found - and how to fix yours in 20 minutes.

Your Google Business Profile is probably the most important free tool you have. It shows up when someone searches "plumber near me" or "HVAC repair." It puts your name, phone number, reviews, and photos right in front of people who are ready to call.

But here's the problem. Most contractors set it up once and never touch it again. Or worse - they don't even know it exists.

We looked at 100 real contractor Google listings. What we found was not good.

87%

of contractor listings were NOT set up right

That means only about 13 out of 100 had their profiles done well. The other 87 were leaving money on the table every single day.

What We Found Wrong

The mistakes were the same ones over and over. And most of them are easy to fix. You just have to know they're there.

📸

No Photos or Old Photos

62 out of 100 had fewer than 5 photos. Some had zero. Google shows listings with photos 42% more often.

🏷️

Wrong or Missing Categories

54 out of 100 only had one category. Google lets you add up to 10. More categories means more searches find you.

📝

Empty Description

71 out of 100 had no business description at all. That's 750 free characters to tell Google what you do. Gone to waste.

Wrong Business Hours

38 out of 100 had hours that didn't match their real schedule. This tells Google your listing is not trustworthy.

The Biggest Shock

Here's what surprised us the most. Many of the business owners we talked to didn't even know what a Google Business Profile was. They had no idea Google gave them a free listing. They didn't know they could add photos, answer questions, or post updates.

Think about that. You have a free tool that puts your business in front of people who are searching for exactly what you do. And you don't even know it's there.

If you want to improve your Google Business Profile ranking, the first step is knowing it exists. The second step is filling it out completely. Most contractors skip both.

What a Good Profile Looks Like

The 13 contractors who had great profiles all did the same things. Here's what set them apart.

1 Full photos of real work

Not stock photos. Real before-and-after shots. Photos of their team. Photos of their trucks. Google rewards listings with 20 or more real photos.

2 Every service listed out

Not just "plumbing." They listed drain cleaning, water heater repair, sewer line work, leak detection - every service they offer. This helps Google match you to more searches.

3 Fresh posts every week

Google Business Profile lets you post updates, offers, and news. The best listings posted at least once a week. This tells Google your business is active.

4 Answered every review

Good or bad, they replied to every single review. This shows customers you care. And Google notices it too.

The Cost of Doing Nothing

Neglected Listing

3-5

calls per month from Google

Optimized Listing

30-50

calls per month from Google

That's the gap. Same business. Same area. Same services. The only difference is one took 20 minutes to fill out their profile. The other didn't.

If you're looking for the best Google Business Profile optimization tools, start with the free one Google already gave you. Most contractors don't need fancy software. They need to fill out what's already there.

💡 Pro Tip

Set a reminder on your phone for every Monday morning. Spend 10 minutes adding a photo, writing a quick post, or answering a new review. That small habit can double your calls in 90 days.

Fix Yours Today

Here's the good news. This is one of the easiest things you can fix in your whole business. You don't need to hire anyone. You don't need to spend money. You just need to go to your Google Business Profile and fill it out.

Start with photos. Add your services. Write a description. Make sure your hours are right. Answer your reviews. That's it.
