Your Google Business Profile categories decide which searches you show up for. A new Whitespark study of 1.8 million profiles found that a specific primary category beats a generic one, with about 36% more businesses landing in the top 10 results. Picking the right categories is free, takes five minutes, and moves rankings.
⚡ QUICK SUMMARY
Whitespark studied 1.8 million Google Business Profiles across 4,209 categories. Three findings matter for local businesses: specific primary categories rank better than generic ones , smart additional picks add another boost, and a fully complete profile nearly triples your odds of hitting the top 10 . Here is what to change on your profile today.
What are Google Business Profile categories?
Google Business Profile categories are the labels that tell Google what your business does. You pick one primary category and up to nine secondary categories. Google uses them to decide which searches and Google Maps results you appear in.
There are more than 4,000 categories to choose from. Some are broad, like Contractor or Grocery store. Others are very specific, like Roofing contractor, Drainage service, or Electric vehicle charging station contractor. The new data shows that choice matters a lot more than most owners think.
Should you pick a generic or specific primary category?
Pick the specific one. Every time. The Whitespark study (published on Search Engine Land, 2026) compared generic primary categories against specific ones across all industries, and the specific group won by a wide margin.
| Generic category 9.2% of businesses reach the top 10 (like "Contractor" or "Restaurant") |
Specific category 12.5% of businesses reach the top 10 (like "Roofing contractor" or "Plumber") |
Look at the contractor numbers from the study. A business using the generic Contractor category had an average rank of 57.7 and only 8% made the top 10. Compare that to the trades that got specific:
- Electrician: average rank 48.6, with 11.2% in the top 10
- Roofing contractor: average rank 53.1, with 12.6% in the top 10
- HVAC contractor: average rank 53.2, with 12.4% in the top 10
- Plumber: average rank 53.2, with 10.4% in the top 10
- Contractor (generic): average rank 57.7, with only 8% in the top 10
Why does this happen? Two reasons. Specific categories have less competition. And Google tries to match the primary category to the search. When someone searches "plumbers near me," Google wants to show plumbers, not general contractors who also do some plumbing.
If you try to rank for everything, you end up ranking for nothing. A generic business category tells Google you specialize in nothing.
Do secondary categories help your rankings?
Yes. The study found that businesses with well-chosen secondary categories ranked 6 to 17 positions higher than businesses with only a primary category. The winning move is pairing your primary category with specific services you actually offer.
Some of the best-ranking combos from the data:
- Plumber + Drainage service: average rank 47.3, vs 54.0 with no secondary category
- Roofing contractor + Gutter service: average rank 47.1, vs 52.1 without
- Electrician + EV charging station contractor: average rank 38.2, vs 47.5 without
One warning from the data: skip junk categories like "Service establishment." Nobody searches for that. The study suggests that vague filler categories may even hurt. Every secondary category should be a real service a real customer would search for.
💡 Pro Tip
The category setup only takes minutes inside your Google Business Profile dashboard. Search your own top service the way a customer would, look at which categories the top 3 businesses use, and match the specific one. We walk through this in our guide on why your business isn't showing up in near me searches.
Does a complete profile really rank better?
Yes, and the numbers are hard to argue with. Whitespark built a 0 to 5 completeness score. One point each for having a website link, a business description, hours, photos, and a claimed profile. Then they checked rankings at every level.
3x
A fully complete profile (5/5) appears in the top 10 three times as often as an empty one: 13% vs 4%
Whitespark study of 1.8 million Google Business Profiles, 2026
Average rank improved by about 19 positions from a 0 score to a 5 score. And here is the part that should worry home service businesses: your competitors already know this. Home services had the most complete profiles of any industry in the study, averaging 4.4 out of 5, with 55% fully complete. If your profile is missing photos or a description, you are behind more than half your market.
The study authors are careful to say this is correlation, not proof of cause. Owners who complete their profiles also tend to ask for reviews and keep their listing active. That is exactly the point. The complete profile is the starting line, not the finish line. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews covers the next step.
How do you fix your categories today?
1 Check your primary category
Make it the most specific match for your main money service. Roofing contractor, not Contractor. HVAC contractor, not Heating company if HVAC is what people search.
2 Add specific secondary categories
List every real service you offer that has its own label. Roofer? Add Gutter service if you do gutters. Electrician? Add EV charging if you install chargers. Skip vague ones.
3 Complete all five basics
Claimed profile, website link, description, hours, and photos. That is the 5/5 score that tripled top-10 odds in the study.
4 Keep it alive
Ask for reviews every week, add fresh job photos, and keep your info accurate. Category and completeness get you in the game. Activity keeps you winning it. Local visibility compounds, as we cover in local SEO for your growing business.
Common questions about Google Business categories
How specific do Google's categories get?
Very. This is not a list of 20 broad industries. A GBP category exists for almost any niche you can imagine: Appliance repair service, Glass repair service, Hot tub repair service, Window tinting service, Floor refinishing service, and Machine repair service on the repair side. Laser hair removal and waxing niches in personal care each get their own label. Real estate agency, Apartment rental agency, and Dress rental service in rentals. Suppliers get granular too: Farm equipment supplier, Fire protection equipment supplier, Irrigation equipment supplier, Hot water system supplier, even Ice cream equipment supplier. Retail runs from Grocery store and Furniture shop to Supply shop niches like an Army navy surplus shop, a Cell phone accessory store, or a Motorcycle dealer. Food has everything from an Indian restaurant to a Conveyor belt sushi restaurant. There is a Car security system installer, an Auto dent removal service, and an Auto radiator repair service. Even AV suppliers and AV repair shops are separate choices. Tour companies can pick Canoe kayak tour agency or Balloon ride tour agency. Care providers have their own set, like Adult foster care service. Whatever you do, a category close to it exists. Browse the full list inside your dashboard and pick the tightest GBP category match, because the closer the label, the fewer businesses you compete with.
Here is a taste of how deep the list goes, pulled straight from Google's own options: Laser hair removal service, Waxing hair removal service, and Electrolysis hair removal service are three separate categories. So are Audio visual equipment supplier and Audio visual equipment repair service. Rentals split into Sports equipment rental service, Canoe kayak rental service, and Construction machine rental service. Retail niches include a Cake decorating equipment shop, a Computer desk store, and a Bar restaurant furniture store, next to an Antique furniture restoration service and an Air compressor repair service. Health care gets a Medical diagnostic imaging center, a Cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, an Eating disorder treatment center, and a Domestic abuse treatment center. Suppliers include a Fire department equipment supplier and a Concrete metal framework supplier. Auto shops can pick Car repair and maintenance service. There is even a Classified ads newspaper publisher. Government and community listings run from Municipal department, Social services department, Department of transportation, and Motor vehicles department to a Secondary school, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The lesson for a business owner: whatever you do, do not settle for the broad label when the exact one exists.
What do I put for business category?
Put the most specific category that matches the service that makes you the most money. If customers search "plumber," your primary category should be Plumber, even if you also do remodeling. Add the rest as secondary categories.
How do I change the primary category on Google Business?
Sign in to your Google Business Profile, click Edit profile, then Business category. Set the primary and secondary categories there. Changes can trigger a short review by Google, which is normal. If you are also changing your address, read our guide on protecting rankings during a GBP address change first.
How many categories should I choose?
One primary plus every specific secondary category that matches a real service you sell. Most businesses land between three and six total. More is fine if each one is real. Junk categories help nobody.
