What Actually Changed

Google doesn't work the way it used to. Here are the three biggest shifts that happened in local search.

The One Thing That Moves the Needle

I've been doing this since 2013. Over five thousand businesses. And the biggest change I've seen in local search is this - you can't keep up without a system to ask for reviews.

Let me say that again. Without a system in place to get reviews on a regular basis, you're just not going to keep up.

The companies that continuously get reviews on an ongoing basis are the ones that show up number one, two, and three on Google Maps. The people that don't put a system in place to get reviews? They fall behind. Every single time.

Can you get reviews without automating? Sure. You can ask your customers. But here's the problem. Most businesses will not ask consistently enough to move the needle. It's not that they don't want to. They're just busy. They're on job sites. They're dealing with problems. Asking for a review is the last thing on their mind at five o'clock when the day is over.

Manual Asking Doesn't Work

I'm not gonna say it's impossible. But it's almost impossible for a local business to get enough reviews without automating the process.

Happy customers want to help you. They just need to be reminded. When you make it this easy, they do it right away.

The best time to ask for a review is right after the job is done. Not the next day. Not next week. Right after. That's when the customer is happiest. An automated text within an hour of job completion gets the highest response rate.

The Old Playbook Is Dead

In 2020, you could get away with a decent Google Business Profile, a few citations, and a handful of reviews. That was enough to show up.

In 2026, that's not enough. Not even close. The businesses winning in local search right now are the ones that:

  • Get new reviews every single week - not once in a while
  • Respond to every review, good and bad
  • Post updates on their Google Business Profile regularly
  • Keep their photos and services current
  • Have a fast, mobile-friendly website that matches their profile

The common thread? Activity. Google rewards businesses that are active and engaged. A profile that sits there collecting dust doesn't cut it anymore.

What to Do This Week

1 Set up automated review requests

Use your CRM or a review tool to send automatic texts after every job. This is the single most impactful thing you can do.

2 Respond to every existing review

Go to your Google Business Profile right now. Reply to every review you haven't responded to. Thank the good ones. Address the bad ones professionally.

3 Stop playing by the 2020 rules

If your online presence hasn't changed in two years, it's time for an update. The game moved on. You need to move with it.

The Bottom Line

Google changed the rules. The businesses that catch up to the new rules win. The ones that don't? They keep wondering why the phone isn't ringing.

The new rules aren't complicated. Get reviews. Get them consistently. Automate the process so it happens without you thinking about it. That's the game in 2026.
