Your LSA Ranking Is Decided After the Phone Rings
Keith Carpenter • October 28, 2026

Most contractors think Local Services Ads ranking is about money. Bid more, show up higher. That is only half the story. The other half gets decided after the phone rings. I have worked with 5,000+ clients since 2013, and the shops that stay on top of LSA are not the ones with the biggest budget. They are the ones who answer, book, and finish the job right. Here is how your listing gets ranked, why that first call matters so much, and what to do with every single call.

⚡ QUICK SUMMARY

Google ranks Local Services Ads with an auction. Your bid counts, but so does how likely you are to turn a search into a lead and how good your profile is. The help page says it looks at how fast you respond, missed calls, your rating, your number of reviews, and your photos. So the contractors who rank best answer fast, call back missed calls in minutes, turn on messages and bookings, ask every happy customer for a review, and keep their business profile full and current. These are the benefits most competitors miss.

How does Local Services Ads ranking work?

Google spells out how Google Local Services Ads work on its own help page, About ad rankings. Every time someone searches, Local Services Ads runs an auction to decide which local service businesses show first. The auction looks at three big things:

1 Your bid

The most you are willing to pay for a lead. The help page suggests the "Maximize Leads" setting, which lets the system set the bid to get the most leads for your budget.

2 How likely you are to get a lead

This is where the call comes in. The help page says your responsiveness to customer inquiries counts, and that missed calls may hurt it. It also looks at what the customer searched for and how well your services match.

3 Your profile quality

Your rating, number of reviews, average response time, high-quality images, and the verification checks you finished. The help page says higher quality profiles may rank higher and may also pay lower costs per lead.

Read that last part again. A better profile can mean a higher spot and a cheaper lead. That is the best deal in all of online advertising, and most contractors leave it on the table.

Why is your LSA ranking decided after the phone rings?

Look at the list above. Your bid is set before the call. Almost everything else is decided by what happens after somebody taps your ad. That is the idea behind this whole post: every ranking factor but one is something you control after the ring.

  • You answer fast. Your responsiveness score goes up. That is a ranking factor.
  • You book the job. Now you have a real customer, not just a lead you paid for.
  • You do great work and ask for a review. Your rating and review count grow. Those are ranking factors too.
  • Your profile gets stronger. Your listing appears more often, and your lead cost can drop.

Now flip it. You miss the call. The homeowner taps the next business. No job, no review, and your responsiveness slips. On top of that, LSA started charging for some missed calls on October 1, 2026, if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds during your business hours. We broke that down in Google Local Services Ads now charge for missed calls. So a missed call can cost you the job, the fee, and your rank, all at once.

That is a loop. Answer and it spins up. Miss and it spins down. Ads alone do not fix a loop that is spinning the wrong way.

What do contractors who stay on top of Local Services Ads do with every call?

Here is the simple system I want every LSA shop to run. None of it costs much. All of it lines up with what Google says it ranks on.

1 Answer every call during business hours

Not most calls. Every call. If you are on a roof or under a sink, have the office, an answering service, or an AI answering desk pick up. Quick responses win the auction and win the job.

2 Call back missed calls in minutes

If one slips through, call back right away. The homeowner is still deciding. Five minutes later, they may have booked someone else.

3 Turn on message and booking leads

The help page says message and booking leads give customers more ways to reach you, especially nights and weekends when you cannot pick up. More ways in means more chances at a lead.

4 Set business hours you can really cover

Only list hours when a real person or service will answer. Hours that do not match who can really pick up just set you up for missed calls.

5 Ask every happy customer for a review

Positive reviews feed your rating and review count. Send the review link by text the same day the job is done, while the customer still feels great.

6 Check your leads every week

Look at each lead in your LSA profile. If a lead was spam, a wrong number, or a job you do not do, there is a lead credit process. Track this every week so you can identify bad leads fast. Keeping lead quality clean keeps your money working.

What other Local Services Ads ranking factors matter?

Your follow-through is the biggest lever you control. But a few other things decide where your listing is displayed:

  • Where the customer is. The auction looks at the context of the search, like location and time. Proximity to the user is part of that, so you often have an advantage in nearby markets and less of one in far-off locations.
  • Your competition. Busy markets have more advertisers, so the auction is more competitive. If you want to expand into a new town, expect to work harder there at first.
  • Account health. Billing issues, a paused ad, or a used-up budget can keep you from showing at all. Check your account every week and fix anything missing immediately.
  • Your budget and spend. Your budget sets how many leads the system tries to send you. If it runs out, you stop showing until it resets.
  • Eligibility. Complete the background check and license steps and keep them current, or you lose your spot.

Notice what is not on the list: keywords. Unlike traditional Google Ads, you do not pick keywords for LSA. The algorithm matches you to searches based on your services, your service area, and your profile. That is why a complete profile is essential.

How do you build a business profile that ranks higher?

Your LSA profile is the second half of profile quality. Here is the checklist:

  • Finish verification. The background check, license, and insurance steps unlock your badge. The old Google Guarantee badge and Google Screened badge are now one badge called Google Verified. See Google Guaranteed is gone for what changed.
  • Add photos. The help page says profiles with images may rank higher. Use real job photos and real crew photos, not stock.
  • Write a clear bio. Say what you do, where you work, and how long you have done it. Relevance to the search is part of the auction.
  • List every service you do. And only the ones you do, so you do not pay for leads you cannot take.
  • Set your service area right. Cover the towns where you want work and can get to fast. Nearby customers searching your service area are the ones you want.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile in sync. Same name, phone, and hours everywhere. Reviews and info on your Google Business Profile help your whole local business show up.

How are Local Services Ads different from traditional Google Ads?

With traditional search ads, you pay per click, and ad rank leans hard on your bid and your ad. With Local Services Ads you pay per lead, like phone calls, messages, and bookings. Because you pay for leads, the system cares a lot about whether you actually help the customer. That is why responsiveness and reviews matter so much more here. LSAs show at the very top of Google search results on mobile and desktop, above the regular ads and the local search results map. Lawyers and other professional services can use them too, but home service trades like plumbers and electricians are the biggest users. Want the full side by side? Read LSA vs Google Ads. What does it cost to ignore what happens after the call?

Picture two shops with the same budget. Shop A answers every call, books the job, and asks for a review. Shop B misses one call in four and never asks for reviews. Every month, Shop A gets more reviews, a better response time, and a stronger profile. Shop B pays for missed calls and watches its rank slide. A few months later, Shop A sits on top with cheaper leads. Shop B is asking why LSA "stopped working."

LSA did not stop working. The follow-through did. Bidding more on a profile the system does not trust is just paying more to lose. Fix what happens after the phone rings first, then decide if you need a bigger budget. Common questions about Local Services Ads ranking

What is ad rank in Local Services Ads?

Ad rank is the order your listing shows in, compared to other local service providers for the same search. It is set with an auction based on your bid, how likely you are to get a lead, and your profile quality.

Will a bigger bid fix a low ranking?

Sometimes a little, but it is the expensive fix. The help page says profile quality can raise your rank and lower your cost per lead. Fix responsiveness, reviews, and photos first.

Do reviews affect Local Services Ads ranking?

Yes. The help page lists your rating and number of reviews as part of profile quality. More positive reviews help.

Do missed calls hurt my ranking?

The help page says missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness, which is part of how it ranks you. Some missed calls can also be charged as leads now.

How fast should I respond to LSA leads?

As fast as you can. Answer calls live, and reply to messages within minutes. Your average response time is tracked, so respond to leads promptly every time.

Does Local Services Ads help local SEO?

Not directly. LSA and local SEO are separate. But the same habits help both: more positive reviews, real photos, and accurate info on your Google Business Profile build credibility and visibility everywhere you show up. A strong reputation brings new customers from every channel and grows revenue over time.
