95% of Businesses Use AI Marketing Tools. Only 39% See Results.

⚡ QUICK SUMMARY

A new 2026 report shows 95% of marketers now use AI tools - but only 39% say those tools are actually working . The gap between having AI and getting results from AI is massive. For small businesses, the lesson is simple: tools alone don't fix anything. You need a plan, the right setup, and someone who knows what they're doing.

Almost every business is using AI in their marketing now. But most of them aren't getting much out of it. That's not a guess. That's what the data says.

New research from the Content Marketing Institute, Salesforce, Forrester, and Demandbase paints a clear picture. Everybody bought the tools. Almost nobody figured out how to use them well.

If you're a local service business - HVAC, plumbing, dental, roofing, electrical - this matters to you. Because the AI tools are everywhere. And the companies selling them make it sound easy. But easy doesn't mean effective.

The Numbers Tell the Story

AI ADOPTION

95%

ACTUAL RESULTS

39%

say AI is delivering real results

Let that sink in. Almost everyone has AI. But fewer than four out of ten businesses say it's actually working for them. That means more than half of the businesses using AI are throwing money at tools that aren't moving the needle.

The CMO Survey backs this up. AI use in marketing doubled from about 13% of activities in 2024 to over 24% in 2026. Spending went up. Activity went up. But results didn't keep pace.

Where AI Falls Short

The research also asked marketers where AI fails them the most. The answers are telling.

🧠

Strategy

57% say AI can't think strategically. It follows instructions but doesn't know your market.

🎨

Creativity

44% say AI output sounds generic. Same voice, same ideas, same bland results.

🎯

Accuracy

39% say AI gets facts wrong or produces content that needs heavy editing.

Here's the pattern. AI is great at doing things fast. It's not great at doing things right - at least not without human guidance. And when you're a small business trying to get customers, "fast but wrong" costs you money.

Why This Matters for Local Businesses

You've probably seen the ads by now. "AI-powered marketing." "Let AI run your ads." "AI chatbots that close deals." Every software company in the world is putting "AI" on their label.

But here's what most people don't realize. The tool isn't the strategy. A hammer is a great tool. But it doesn't build the house by itself.

A Forrester study found only 26% of companies have successfully put AI into real daily operations. The rest are stuck in pilot mode - testing tools but never getting real value from them.

For a plumber or a roofer or a dentist, this plays out in a specific way. You sign up for an AI marketing tool. You click around for a week. You get some auto-generated social posts that sound like a robot wrote them. Your phone doesn't ring any more than before. You cancel.

That's not because AI doesn't work. It's because nobody set it up right for your business.

What Actually Gets Results

The businesses that ARE seeing results from AI have three things in common. They have a clear strategy first. They have people who know how to use the tools. And they measure what matters.

1 Start With a Plan, Not a Tool

Before you buy any AI tool, answer this: what problem am I trying to solve? More leads? Faster follow-up? Better reviews? Pick one thing first. Then find the tool that does that thing well.

2 Get Expert Help With Setup

The biggest difference between the 39% who see results and the 61% who don't? Setup. Someone has to train the AI on your business, your customers, and your market. A generic out-of-the-box setup won't cut it.

3 Measure What Matters

Don't just look at how many posts AI created or how many emails it sent. Look at calls. Look at booked jobs. Look at revenue. If the tool isn't making your phone ring, something is off.

4 Let AI Handle the Boring Stuff

AI shines when you give it clear, repeatable tasks. Sending follow-up texts. Answering FAQs. Scheduling appointments. Posting to social media on a schedule. Let AI do the grunt work so you can focus on running jobs.

💡 Pro Tip

The best use of AI for most local businesses isn't content creation or ad management. It's speed-to-lead. An AI system that responds to new leads in under 60 seconds - by text, email, or voice - can double your close rate. That's where the real money is.

The Bottom Line

AI marketing tools are everywhere. But having a tool and getting results from that tool are two very different things. The data is clear: most businesses are in the "have it but not using it well" camp.

The good news? This is actually an opportunity. If most of your competitors are fumbling with AI, the businesses that get it right have a serious edge. Better follow-up. Better visibility. Better customer experience. All while spending less time on tasks that used to take hours.

You don't need to become an AI expert. You need a team that already is one. That's the whole point of working with people who do this every day - so you can stay on the job site while your marketing runs itself.
