You post the finished deck. The new furnace. The truck with the fresh wrap. Twelve likes, most of them family. It is not the algorithm punishing you. It is simpler and more fixable than that: your first three seconds are losing the fight.
⚡ QUICK SUMMARY
Nearly half of consumers give a small business post 10 seconds or less before scrolling on (National Law Review, 2026). Terrible hooks are the killer. The first line or first frame has to stop the scroll , or nothing after it matters. Good news: hooks are a skill, and this post shows you the formula.
Why Does Nobody Care About Your Posts?
Because nobody was given a reason to care in the first three seconds. After helping over 5,000 home service businesses market themselves since 2013, I can tell you the pattern is always the same. The work in the photo is excellent. The first line is dead on arrival.
"Another beautiful bathroom remodel completed by our team!" is not a hook. It is a caption for an audience that already cares, and strangers do not care yet. Your customers are doom scrolling with their thumb on autopilot. One survey found 49% of consumers spend 10 seconds or less on a small business post before deciding to scroll past (National Law Review, 2026). You are not competing with other contractors for that thumb. You are competing with everything.

The 3-Second Rule
Here is the rule I give every business owner we work with: the first 3 seconds of the content needs to grab them by the throat and stop the scroll. If it does not, they are doom scrolling past you, and the other 57 seconds of your video never existed.
That sounds aggressive. It should. Polite openers are invisible. Compare:
| Invisible "We're proud to offer quality HVAC service to the area!" Scrolled past before word four |
Stops the scroll "This furnace was 3 weeks from starting a house fire." Now they need to know the rest |
Hooks That Work for Service Businesses
You do not need to be clever. You need to open a loop the viewer has to close. These five patterns do it every time:
1 The stakes hook
"This $12 part is why your AC bill doubled." Money, danger, or time on the line, stated in the first breath.
2 The mistake hook
"The last company did this wrong, and it cost the homeowner $4,000." People cannot look away from someone else's mistake.
3 The reveal hook
"Wait until you see what we found behind this wall." Show the worst frame first. Never save the surprise for the end.
4 The contrarian hook
"Stop power washing your roof." Say the opposite of what everyone believes, then earn it in the next 30 seconds.
5 The specific number hook
"This repair took 22 minutes and saved a $6,800 replacement." Specific numbers read as true. Round numbers read as marketing.
One warning: the hook has to be true. Never invent a house fire or a fake price. The real stories on your job sites are dramatic enough, and trust is the whole product.
The Fix Is a Rewrite, Not More Posts
Notice what I did not say: post more. If nobody cares, volume makes it worse. Take the posts you already make, keep the same photos and videos, and rewrite only the opening. Video? Put the most shocking frame and sentence first. Photo post? The first line of the caption is your hook, because that is all anyone sees before "See more."
Then let the rest of the post do its normal job: tell the story, show the work, and point people somewhere. If you are unsure what raw material to start from, your crew is already collecting it every day, and we broke down the full content mix in what to post on social media. Posting rhythm questions? That is covered in how often a small business should post.
💡 Pro Tip
Test your hook out loud. Read the first line to someone who does not work with you. If they do not ask a question back, it is not a hook yet. Rewrite until they do.
The Part After the Hook Still Has to Work
A great hook earns you 30 more seconds of attention. What you do with it decides whether the post makes money. Every post should end with one clear next step, and the places you send people, your website, your phone line, your booking page, have to be ready. A scroll-stopping video that sends people to a website full of design mistakes or an unanswered phone just entertains your competitors' future customers.
Hooks stop the scroll. Systems turn the stop into a job. You need both, and the hook comes first.
