Social Media Doesn't Generate Leads. (Until You Stop Doing It Wrong.)
Keith Carpenter • August 14, 2026

"We tried social media. It doesn't work for our business." We hear that from contractors every week. Then we look at their pages and find the same five mistakes, every time. Social media does generate leads for service businesses. But only after you stop posting like a hobbyist and start posting like someone who understands why people scroll.

⚡ QUICK SUMMARY

When a contractor says social media does not work, they are usually making five fixable mistakes : selling to people who are not ready to buy, posting with no hook, showing work without proof, quitting after five posts, and having no system to catch the leads. Fix those five and the same platforms that "failed" start producing. The hook is everything, and structure beats luck.

Why Doesn't Social Media Work for Most Contractors?

Because they are not structuring their content correctly. The hook is everything. Then you need the right formulas to keep people watching longer, which makes the algorithm love you more and show your content to more people. Having a framework beats posting whatever feels right on a Tuesday. Here are the five failures we see over and over, and what to do instead.

Mistake 1: Selling to People Who Aren't Ready to Buy

Most contractor pages only post offers: "10% off this month." "Call today for a free estimate." Those messages only work on the tiny slice of people ready to buy right now. Everyone else scrolls past, and the algorithm learns your content is skippable.

The fix is meeting people at their awareness level. Post for the homeowner who just noticed a problem: "If your AC is doing this at 10 pm, here's what it means." Post for the one comparing options: "3 ways to tell if your roof guy is about to screw you." You get reach when you meet people where they are, not where you wish they were. The offers still belong in the mix, just not as the whole mix.

Mistake 2: Posting With No Hook

Logo graphics. "Happy Friday!" posts. Blurry jobsite photos with no caption. None of it gives anyone a reason to stop scrolling.

Compare that to: "Homeowners: if your contractor says this on the estimate, run." Or: "One missed call like this cost this plumber a $7,800 job." Those first lines create an open loop the brain wants closed.

No hook, no attention. No attention, no chance to sell. It really is that simple.

If you are not sure what a hook looks like for your trade, we broke down real examples in why nobody cares about your posts (and how to fix it).

Mistake 3: Showing Work Instead of Proof

A photo of a finished deck is work. Proof is the before AND after, plus what was wrong, what it would have cost to ignore, and how fast you fixed it. Work says "we exist." Proof says "hire us."

Work

"New roof installed today"

One photo, no story, no stakes

Proof

"This leak was 6 months from a $14k ceiling collapse. Fixed in 2 days."

Before/after, the danger, the cost, the speed

Mistake 4: Posting Like a Hobbyist

Three weeks. Five posts. Then "social media doesn't work" and quit. That is the average contractor's social media career.

Think of content like reps in the gym: volume first, refinement after. Nobody critiques their bench form on rep number three and gives up on fitness. The businesses that win post steadily for months, watch what performs, and make more of the winners. Platforms like TikTok make this even more true, which is why we covered the posting pace that works in our TikTok for business guide.

Mistake 5: No Next Step When It Finally Works

This is the silent one. A post takes off, a homeowner clicks, and then: no call to action, no landing page, no booking link, and a phone nobody answers. They blame Instagram. It was their front office.

Every post needs somewhere to send people, and something has to catch them when they arrive. That means a page worth landing on, automated follow-up so no lead falls through the cracks, and a fix for the missed calls quietly costing you jobs. Attention is rented. Capture is owned.

💡 Keith's Take

"Social media didn't fail the contractor. The contractor failed to give social media anything worth showing, anyone to capture, and any system to catch the leads when they finally showed up."

So Does Social Media Generate Leads or Not?

It does, as one part of a system. Fresh 2026 survey data shows email still beats social on direct return (4.2:1 vs 2.8:1 per dollar, DesignLoud, 2026), which is why we tell clients social media is the attention engine, and email plus follow-up is the money engine. We compared the two head to head in email vs social media ROI. If you burned five hours a week posting with nothing to show for it, the problem was never the platform. We wrote about that exact trap in 5 hours on social media, zero leads.

Fix the five mistakes above in order. Awareness first, hooks second, proof third, volume fourth, capture fifth. Skip any one of them and the chain breaks.
